Gay Travel Market Benefits NYC Hotel

According to a report by Reuters, THE OUT NYC gay urban resort benefits from its location. Representatives from NYC & Company, New York City’s tourism organization, explain that the city is one of the most sought destinations for LGBT travelers worldwide. The hotel, designed by architect Paul Dominguez, opened for business this month and offers amenities such as a 5,000-foot (1524-meter) a sunbathing deck, a gym and wellness centre, three separate courtyards, and a restaurant that will open later this spring.

PayPal Co-founder Wins Leadership Award for LGBT Entrepreneurs

Peter Thiel, entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist and PayPal co-founder, was honored Thursday night with a leadership award at
StartOut's First Annual LGBT Entrepreneurship Awards ceremony in San Francisco.

Jack Stephenson, director of mobile, e-commerce and payments at JPMorgan Chase, presented the award to Thiel, who also served as keynote speaker. "As a pioneer and visionary, Peter has helped to build the next generation of tech entrepreneurs both in Silicon Valley and across the globe," said Stephenson. "His leadership and achievements have been an inspiration to the LGBT entrepreneurial community, and we're proud to honor him tonight surrounded by such exceptional talent and innovative spirit."

Other honorees included Kathy Levinson, former E*TRADE COO and Lesbian Equity Foundation founder; Geoff Lewis, founder and CEO of TopGuest; and Ramona Pierson, founder and CEO of SynapticMash.

Study the Evolution of Gay and Lesbian Marketing

Dr. Katherine Sender’s exceptional work continues to be relevant and beneficial in an era when reaching niche audiences plays an increasingly important role in marketing plans. Her book offers a detailed historical overview of gay and lesbian marketing. She challenges marketers who say the business of advertising to a gay audience is independent from that group’s politics and identity. 

The claim that any marketing is a matter of “business, not politics” disavows the extent to which all marketing has political effects including, for example, the cumulative impact of advertising on the economy (both in generating ad revenues and in stimulating consumption), the circulation of an ethos of consumption, and the affirmation of ideologies about gender, class, race, and other identities. Yet, as with the question of stereotyping, the particular ways gay marketing is political is shaped by a history of gay invisibility and homophobia; the claim that gay marketing is “business, not politics has specific applications to the circulation of gay and lesbian images. As struggles over the meaning of gay visibility suggest, gay critics (as well as consumers and marketers themselves) are well aware of the political context in which gay media images appear, and of the potential impact they may have.

Sender explores the role that LGBT-focused marketing plays in advancing civil rights and analyzes the often-limited representations of LGBT people and groups. The gay community is not some neat little niche that marketers simply tap into. Instead, it is formed not only through political activism but also the commercially supported media that shapes its identity. Gay activists argue that a gay identity sitting on the shoulders of commercial advertising has little room for members who don’t meet the needs of corporations. However, a wealth of advertising dollars can beef up media serving the LGBT population, which in turn strengthens their communities through an exchange of news and other information. 


LA Mayor Favors Gay Marriage Plank for Dems

Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who chairs the 2012 Democratic National Convention, said he favors a party platform plank to legalize gay marriage, reports Politico. He responded to a question on the matter Wednesday at the POLITICO Playbook Breakfast. President Barack Obama has said he supports civil unions, not marriage, but also has said his position is evolving.

New Utah Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce promotes business interests

When it comes to money, there’s no difference between a gay dollar and a straight dollar. That is the key message for the new Utah Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, which held its first business expo this weekend on the top floor of Zions Bank in downtown Salt Lake City.
